PS: The W4sted space bombers are examples of small ships launching small ships so there's no demonstration of using rotors to convert grid types but the second one does show how you have to separate out your grinders with a rotor. W4tedspace recently did two light bomber designs using both methods and they're both very effective. So all other things being equal the question is which detaching method works best for your application? Merge blocks tend to be more compact designs since in total use less space then a grinder assembly but if you design your missile to carry a cargo can of rock or run on a reactor, you can use conveyors as your connection to the launching ship to automatically load up the cargo before you grind the connectors away. Keep in mind that for a grinder-based detaching mechanism you have to mount the grinder on a rotor to get it onto a separate grid (ships refuse to grind themselves) so there's going to be rotors either way but in both the grinder and merge block method the rotors don't DO anything they're locked in place so the glitch-prone factor is a lot lower than most designs involving rotors.
